Plastic is designed to last. We've never bought any plastic packaging since starting as an aquaponics farm in 2017, opting instead to collect food grade punnets destined for the bin from restaurants, clean them and re-use them.
We've learnt a lot about how to store herbs, made mistakes, and spent a lot of time scrubbing. But from a single restaurant, this has saved over 900 punnets in a year*.
We don't really believe in recycling as a leading environmental claim. There's currently no accountability to ensure it gets recycled. Even if the end consumer puts it in the right bin, there's a fair chance it will end up in landfill in a far flung country, without the adequate resources.
We need more businesses that use recycled materials (and probably a virgin plastic tax).
As we grow, we'd like to develop a more suitable product for growing and distributing our produce, using recycled materials.
